Your Holiday Inn story goes to prove that you don't have to go far (or pay a lot of $) to get away for a family vacation. Getting away from home with the family is also a good way to bond on neutral territory.

Me and my kids love taking road trips both short and long and we've always found the best accommodations are not necessarily the chain hotels and motels. We never make reservations either. That way we can do a drive by before negotiating a room rate. That way, if the rate's too high we can just walk away, and always go look at the competing places to stay in the area before finding a room.

And, the best part is, all these road trips make for fun (often hilarious) content on my family-friendly blog MommyBlogExpert.blogspot.com
