Monty Rex is a fabulous new toy put out by Playskool. My children loved the fact that Monty Rex was able to be played with quickly, unlike many other toys Monty was freed from his box in about two (2) minutes. Although he did growl at me while I was removing him the kids still wanted to play with him. After turning him from the “Try Me” mode to the “On” mode he became a lot more fascinating to them.
I feel that Monty Rex is a great value for the money. It is a sturdy toy that can endure large amounts of abuse. Poor Monty Rex has been tripped over, dropped and hit yet he shows no sign of wear and tear and has not malfunctioned at all. My older kids (ages 11 and 10) and my husband (48 years) also enjoy playing with Monty Rex. They love to make him growl, sniff and eat their hands or feet; this latter fact has made my youngest child (22 months) afraid of Monty Rex. Monty Rex even growls back at my children when they growl or talk to him. Occasionally it sounds like Monty Rex was repeating what they were saying. I love the fact that after two (2) minutes of inactivity Monty Rex turns itself off and will not restart unless one of his trigger points are pushed as well as the fact that he can walk well on regular carpet.
Unfortunately Monty Rex does not play music very long, nor is there a place to repeat the music without going through various other dinosaur sounds. I would have loved a button to play the music repeatedly as my youngest does not express fear of Monty Rex while Monty Rex is playing music.
Overall I think that Monty Rex is a good value for the money and in retrospect I would not let a small child see Monty Rex “eat” any part of you to eliminate those fears in the beginning. I would highly recommend this toy for a child or adult who loves dinosaurs. Watch a video here !
