My Father

My father and I have not talked since about 1995. We had a falling out over my (ex) stepmother while he was still married to her. He has never met my ex husband or my current husband or any of his grandchildren by me. He visits my brothers and my older brothers children. I found out from my mother that my dad had a valve replaced near or on his heart with a pig one (my mom said that was fitting) then he got divorced from my step mom married another lady from the phillipines and moved there for a year. He moved back to the US and visited everyone except me and my family. He is now living in NJ according to my mom. She called me today to tell me that her and my step dad are not getting back together (they had divorced and tried to reconcile) and then asked me if I had heard about my father. Apparantly he is in the hospital with a blood clot in his brain and if they cannot get it to go away they may have to operate. My paternal grandfather died from a brain anurysem so I am not taking this well. It has not been me that would not talk to him he refuses to talk to me. I do not even know where he lives. I am not sure how I should feel. I am crying though. I was always a daddy's little girl until this.

The original fight was when my ex step mother cursed out my paternal grandmother and I totally screamed at her for insulting my grandmother/my fathers mother in his house. My father said I disrespected my step mother and made me move out after high school granduation. I talked to him for a couple months after I left his house but since 1995 basically nothing.

I have talked to my brother today and they did a CAT scan on my father today and the bllod clot is still there and it is still bleeding. He is on coumadin due to a heart valve replaced a few years ago so that limits the meds they can give him since there are heart problems. His speech is slurred and he has Bells Palsey like symptoms (one side of face drooping, slurred speech, etc ) but the Dr's are not saying 100% he has that yet. They are hoping for the blood clot to be absorbed by the brain (best option) or to be absorbed by the brain where they would drill a hole to releive the pressue or they will drill a hole, remove part of the skull and remove the clot via surgery. They are doing another cat scan in the morning.

I mentioned to my brother that I have been wanting to talk to my dad for 15 years and I cannot. I said I am taking this really hard since my father could die and I could not say goodbye. He said it is not his place to give me our dads number or even tell me what hospital he is in. He does not want me calling around and finding my fathers room and calling him since it may upset him and given his condition it could kill him. He said he mentioned to my father that I called and I was worried and they were in contact with me. He said if my dad asks for my number he will give it to him. All I can do is wait and worry.

The update earlier was that the blood clot was getting smaller and that they still might operate tomorrow. The about an hour ago I got a phone call from my sister in law that they were on their way to the hospital. My father either had a massive stroke or a massive seizure. He was being sent to the CT scan machine to determine what was going on. They are going to call me back after they talk to the Dr.

I was at my friends motel when they called and my friends said they would give me the $$ to go. Now all I have to do is wait and see if they tell me to come. I did call my sister in law back and let them know I could get there if needed. I have also wrote my father a letter and e-mailed it to my brother (he has an iPhone he can get it) and asked him to give it to my father. I have done everything I can to get in contact with myfather. I hope he decides to talk to me.

I heard it was a Grand Mal Seizure and he is stable. They were waiting for the doctor to come in and I have not heard back so I hope to hear something in the morning!

I just wanted to send a quick update to people and let them know how my father is doing.

The doctors think that the blood clot on my father’s brain was cause by the Coumadin that he was taking due to the mechanical heart valve he had installed several years ago. He has been off Coumadin since he has been in the hospital. The blood clot has gotten a little smaller (good news) however now he has been having seizures. They have him on an antiepileptic drug and are waiting for it to reach a therapeutic level (hopefully by Monday) before they burr a hole and extract the blood clot from his brain. After he is in stable condition after the brain surgery they will do a heart surgery on him at the latter part of next week. They will be removing the mechanical heart valve (they cannot leave it in since if Coumadin created the clot in the first place they do not want to risk that again). He will have the mechanical heart valve replaced with a pig valve. They are hoping that everything will return back to normal with both surgeries. He does have some symptoms of Bells Palsy and it is unknown if those will continue to exist after the surgery. He did not get a pig valve in the first place since their estimated life is ten years. After about 10 years they need to be replaced and the mechanical is supposed to not need replacement. So please keep my father (Roy Bredahl) in your prayers throughout next week.

My father had the brain surgery today and he is stable, awake and talking. They have moved him out of the ICU (too quick---same day as brain surgery???) He will have heart surgery before he can leave hosp!

The bandages were moved off his head yesterday and so far so good. There is still no set date on the heart surgery. We just know it will be before he leaves the hospital. Thanks for all the prayers.

He got released from the hospital about a week ago and as of now he is fine. He is on reduced activity for 6 weeks.
