The North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) asks that you immediately remove recalled foods potentially contaminated with Salmonella from your facilities. Your prompt action is necessary to protect public health and prevent future illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths. As of Sunday, January 18, 2009, 475 people have been made ill (23% hospitalized) by the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium in 43 states and Canada. The peanut paste is distributed to food manufacturers to be used as an ingredient in many commercially produced products including cakes, cookies, crackers, candies, cereal and ice cream.
Please be advised multiple recalls have been initiated for products containing peanut butter due to the risk of Salmonella contamination. These products include, but are not limited to: Austin, Kebbler, and Little Debbie brands of peanut butter sandwich cookies, select Snack-Size Packs of Famous Amos and Soft Batch Cookies, CLIF and LUNA brand bars, select Kroger ice cream products, ZonePerfect bars, some Jeijer brand bars, Wal-Mart bakery brand peanut butter cookies, Lofthouse Peanut Butter cookies, Chuck's Chunky peanut butter cookies, Pastries Plus Gourmet Cookies, and South Bend Chocolate Company chocolates with peanut butter.

Facilities disposing of recalled product should ensure the product is discarded in a secured dumpster or denatured to prevent consumption of the product. Consumers with recalled product should be advised to dispose of the product and may contact the manufacturer to receive a refund.
