I hate trying to get the kids to try on new clothes that they don’t like. Money is tight! So we always have to go places that the kids might not find cool – It would be great to actually have them excited to go for once!

The thing I hate the most about school shopping is how much money I have to spend at one time. There is school clothes, plus the whole list of supplies that have to be bought right at the same time. $500 would really take the edge off!

    Thanks!

What I hate most is when there is a “One Day Sale” like at Old Navy and you get up early and go there and still there isnt anything left in the size your kids wear!

Here is a tip: buy the wrong size anyway and then later in the week take them back and exchange them for the right size.

  40. Karen_Perea on August 5, 2009 12:08 pm

I hate that school specify the brands and colors of things you can buy. Who cares what name is on the glue or crayons. If my child has a blue folder and the others have red at least he has a folder! I would also like them to split the lisst up. What on earth do they do with the 50 boxes of tissues ont he first day of school.

I despise back to school shopping for several reasons. It seems that the things I am looking for are not always in stock so I have to make several trips to different stores. I got lucky this year and found all of their school supplies in one place. It cost me close to $170.00 to get all the things on the both kids school supply list. Is it me or are their supply list double what they were last year? Now I’m not sure if we can afford to buy all their clothes for school until next month.. They will start out in their clothes from last year :( .

I can not only pick 1 thing I hate about back to school shopping…with my 5 year old who is ADHD taking him to the stores for him to try on clothes (with his sisters doing the same thing) and trying to budget $$ for clothes and school supplies for a 5yo boy, a 10yo girl, and a 13yo girl is CRAZY and add the crowds/not being able to find everything on top is enough to make any parent nuts…

  51. Mariangela Pandolfo on August 5, 2009 2:37 pm

I hate buying new clothing for my 8 year old because she is so picky and because she doesn’t really need extra clothes just because school is starting!i am always ona budget and also don’t appreciate teachers who send lists at home for supplies with brand names….maybe they have their reasons but I think most of the glues are the same….

What I hate most is school uniforms. Someone out here in Louisiana decided that all our kids should wear uniforms for school. So I have only 3 stores in the entire area that sell the required uniforms & of course, they are ridiculously expensive.

Standard back to school costs for 3 uniforms is almost $200.

And I can always count on having to buy longer pants half-way through the school year, ’cause kids grow like weeds!

Then I still have the lists from each and every teacher in the school who all want my kid to have the specific folders or pencils, or – so help me – baby wipes (even in High School).

And don’t let me forget that our kids must have clear or Mesh backpacks – you have to be able to see through them. Of course, they fall apart so easily, I can count on at least 3 of those through the school year.

You know, it didn’t cost my parents near as much & I received a better education than my kids do now. What’s Up with that?

Thanks for the contest! That could really make a difference for us. Too bad WalMart isn’t one of the places to get Uniforms!

What I hate most is that first you need to help your kids clean out their closets. Oh, the decisions-What to keep, what to discard. Kids take forever to decide. Then the list of what they need. Finally, the actual shopping. Teens can look at themselves in one outfit in front of a mirror for hours trying to decide, should I get it? No? Enough said. You get the picture.

The worst, the fight that I always ended up having with my daughter. I want a few basics, like pants and skirts in neutral colors and then add 4-5 tops for each and accessories for each so that we can make many outfits out of a few basics. Saves money. Daughter always wants the complete opposite. She wants funky clothes, that match nothing and make 1 outfit. We usually find a compromise.

I despise the long lines. Also, as happy as I am about tax-free shopping, the deals before and after the tax-free days are better. I hate seeing everyone run out and spend to save a mere 7-8%.

  179. Susan Lee on August 5, 2009 8:44 pm

As a kid, I used to love back to school shopping. My mother (who didn’t drive) would call a cab and we would go shopping downtown. Buy new clothes, school supplies (a tablet, a carton of crayons and two number 2 pencils, those were the days).

Back to school isn’t the big transition that it used to be. It should be, I work for a university).

There’s no big thrill in shopping for new clothes and school supplies, and at work the Business Office just came out with another complicated directive on how we have to get them.

What I hate most aboout back to school shopping is the fact that the lists of school supplies seems to grow worse every year and it seems so does the economy. Last year we spent a small fortune on school supplies and that was one the absolute necessities on their school supply lists! I do not know how some families do it. The past two years the kids have gotten very few school clothes, like new shoes, socks & undies, because that’s all we could afford after buying supplies. It can be quite frustrating!

we go through this every year!
i want to help my daughter look great and feel great about herself.
She want’s the namebrand–my wallet says otherwise.

  317. Kristen Hendricks on August 6, 2009 1:47 am

The thing I hate most about “Back to School” shopping is how crowded the stores are during the weeks leading up to school starting again. Sometimes I find the stores to be too crowded around “Back to School” time for my liking and I try to avoid shopping at some of the stores during “Back to School” time instead getting any school supplies I might need at other times of the year.

  318. Michael K. on August 6, 2009 2:17 am

The one thing I hate the most about school shopping is how much money I have to spend on the kids. They always want the newest things.

  319. kate on August 6, 2009 2:26 am

What I hate the most is that I am next to the oldest one there and have no clue what to wear. I wear my own style and sometimes get compliments and other times I hear add a scarf . But zI couple use some walmart bucks to get some extra supplies. Thanks so much.

  320. Ysenia Ramirez on August 6, 2009 2:44 am

  327. Darlene T on August 6, 2009 3:59 am

  328. Pamela Callahan on August 6, 2009 4:32 am

My oldest is at the age where he only wants name-brand clothing and shoes. It tends to turn into a big scene when we go school shopping and I pull into Walmart. If it doesn’t cost a fortune, he doesn’t want it!

  329. reallycool31 on August 6, 2009 4:42 am

I hate the crowds and how the supply list grows every year.

  330. Tari Lawson on August 6, 2009 5:03 am

Our schools don’t provide supply lists until after the kids go back to school so by the time I go out, many of the items are already gone.

  333. Mary on August 6, 2009 5:41 am

What I hate about back-to-school shopping is the fact that we’re on a very tight budget and we’ve had some unexpected home repairs to pay for. The kids need school supplies and clothing, and we’re stressed out about how we’re going to pay for it all. The Walmart gift card would be a HUGE blessing!

  354. Sandra K321 on August 6, 2009 6:49 am

The thing that I hate most about back to school shopping is that my sons won’t go. I have to buy a ton of clothes and bring them home. Then they look at them and tell me what the like and (mostly) what they don’t. Then I have to return almost everything I bought and try again. At least the jeans are easy. They only where one style of one brand so I just have to get the right size.

  357. Heather S on August 6, 2009 6:58 am

I think that anyone who complains about their kids should think about some of us who weren’t lucky enough to have any. It’s a terrific contest and I hope I win. I know many children who live around me who don’t get gifts because of lack of money and/or not very smart parents. Anyhow, good luck to all.

  389. SGG on August 6, 2009 10:30 am

Fighting the crowds because we rarely shop before open house since the supply lists online are rarely what the teacher actually requires. We’ve also spent many years going to multiple stores to find very specific items everyone is sold out of (for ex, blue, three-prong, reinforced pocket folders or mini marble composition books). It can be more than a little frustrating at times.

What I dislike is that the kids always want stuff that isn’t on the list. They always feel that the extra “stuff” is something they just gotta have and that all the other kids will have it! 546. Laci on August 6, 2009 7:58 pm

What I hate about back to school shopping is that my 8 year old daughter sees so many outfits that she would love to have that are fairly inexpensive but we just can’t afford to buy anything. Most of her clothes are hand me downs from friends. All of our money goes to bills! I can’t think of a time that I was ever able to take her shopping for new clothes unless she got a gift card for her birthday or we buy things on clearance at walmart for cheap, even then it’s usually only one or two outfits! I feel like I have let her down. :(

It’s hard to focus on the things you need to get when you have to stuff food in someones mouth every 5 sec. or take your newly potty trained child the bathroom 3x while in Old Navy. Ok so I went shopping with the 4 kids today, I’m drained.

The thing that I dislike most about Back to school shopping is the expense and the time spent shopping and cleaning! Times are tough right now and no parent wants their kids to have to go without so “pinching pennies” has a whole new meaning and especially when it comes to back to school shopping! I have to clean out my daughter’s closet and dresser and then go and buy new clothes and then the school supplies on top of the book rental at school and the gas spent driving here and there and everywhere! $500 would get it all day plus some! That would be extremely helpful and greatly appreciated!!

how much prices go up year
    after year.

  572. Jenn on August 6, 2009 11:12 pm

I love the great deals and motivation I get to organize with all of my new office supplies during back to school. There is something about having new supplies that makes me want to re-organize everything to be more efficient! Plus it allows my family to stock up on the things we use throughout the year for pennies compared to what they normall cost!

I hate the idea that most people think back-to-school shopping has to be some expensive, horrible experience.

What I like least about back to school shopping….it is so expensive and then the school supply list times four for my grandchildren (both of my sons have four kids). Grandpa took one school supply shopping last year and it was ridiculous…everything from hand sanitizer and kleenex to plastic baggies and oh those colored folders…and they must be the exact colors and on and on and on.

I hate going shopping with my girls. They both have two different styles and are very picky. Anything that I think is cute or stylish usually gets a face. You know that I,m not wearing that face. It usually takes hours just to get a few outfits.

i hate that when you lookign for good deals ,or boys clothes its either picked over stuff ,or they just don’t have the prices your looking for

  591. Andrea Norris on August 7, 2009 9:05 am

I hate trying to find my daughter a “proper” binder. At her school they require a binder with a zipper. Those things are huge (she’s just in elementary school) and bulky for a small child to carry. And most are expensive. I saw one this year for $21. Maybe if she was in high school i wouldn’t mind spending that much…

  592. Shannon Brown on August 7, 2009 9:21 am

I love shopping for kids but the only thing i don’t like is when the stores is packed full of people and they be all in the way especially waiting in line.

As with any shopping, but more prevalent right before school starts what I hate most is the flocks of parents giving in to their ill disciplined and demanding children. Sorry to be so blunt and I love kids; I do. :)

What I hate the most about school clothes shopping is that you can’t really find clothes for boys size 8 anywhere I live and what you can’t find is ugly or way to expensive. I almost wish my son wore uniforms instead. The dress code at his school prevents him from wearing somethings and those items seem to be everywhere.

What I hate the most is that once the kids get to middle school and high school they have 4 or 5 different teachers all with their own required supplies so we end up with 4 or 5 lists of supplies to buy.

  750. patricia on August 9, 2009 10:41 am

What I dont like most about back to school shopping is when the stores advertise sales and dont have the products when you get there.

We spend our gas and time going there. I simply wont shop in the store at the point giving my business to another store.

  784. Heather Julian on August 9, 2009 7:32 pm

Bargain hunting. It’s a pain. While I love looking at the sale papers every Sunday, and applying for freebie and discounts; I don’t like bargain shopping. You go into a store thinking you’re getting an amazing deal, the next thing you know, an even better one pops up. In order to be a good consumer, I keep what I already got, but mope about the money I could have saved. Not saving money is always a burden. Especially when I don’t have any.

What I hate most is that I am on a strict budget and have to use cash. When it’s gone, it’s gone, and there is no more. My teenager does not handle this well. The fights are neverending and stressful. My four year old is easy-I can shop the clearance racks and he is happy with whatever I buy.

  803. Glenda Kiesewetter on August 10, 2009 6:14 am

WOW! DOES THE COST OF GOING BACK TO SCHOOL ADD UP!!! That is the part I don’t like. Also the fact that my daughter didn’t like any of the backpacks or lunchboxes we saw at another store…so she waited til I was almost pulling into the driveway and said “I thought we were going back to get the froggy lunchbox I kind of liked”…..and then it becomes imperative we turn back as it was the last one….

  804. Amy on August 10, 2009 6:24 am

What I hate the most is dragging my 4 kids around to tons of different stores and then arguing over them trying things on, or arguing over style and fit (that skirt is too short!) and arguing over affordability (no, I can not pay $65 for that pair of jeans). I spend more on their clothes in one year than I’ve spent on my own in the last 5 years.

The thing I have always hate most about back to school shopping was when you got a supply list at registration for your teacher, and then go on the first day of school and they tell the kids that they also need these supplies too. I want to ask them, ok, so why didn’t you put that on the supply list in the first place?

  911. amber on August 11, 2009 8:54 pm

Clothing shopping is a real pain! It’s hard finding the right sizes, reasonable prices, and not to mention you find a lot of empty racks where the good stuff is sold out. Nothing stinks worse than the excitement of finding a cute shirt, but discovering they only have the crappy brown color left in stock :) lol. Long lines are usually a pain also.

Its irritating when individual elementary schools all have their own supply lists, which vary by teacher and those are not given out until 2 weeks before school starts. Also dont like when they are soooo specific on what they want that they only give you one option of where to buy it at..for example, certain sizes of colored paper and very specific colors from only one brand! ahhh, kindergarden used to be so simple! ha Thanks for the chance to enter to win some much needed money!

I always hate to see school start for 2 reasons, my kids will be gone and we can’t spend the whole day together and school shopping. I stay at home so we only have 1 income and trying to dress kids for school on a tight budget is horrible. This year my daughter is a senior and so shopping is rough because she is 5′ 2″ and wears about a size 3-4 well she won’t wear the shorts they sell, she is tiny except for her thighs because she is a cross country runner so no pants fit. Well my son went from 7th grade to 9th grade this year which means no more uniforms, well he is about 5′8″ and wears a size 18 in boys, which the shorts are to short and he wont wear jeans as we live in florida and he says they are to hot. He’s also in cross country but skinny so I know school starts soon and our favorite store went out of business steve & barry’s so what I’m I going do?

what I hate about back to school shopping is going by a list. I bought things last year for my son that were on a school list and he didn’t even need some of them. Also he gets pencils (mech.pencils), pens, and etc… stolen from him, even with his name on them. Also back to school shopping doesn’t stop there, it is a off and on thing all through the school year.

I hate the fact that this peer pressure on what’s cool, and what “lacks” coolness, actually ends up putting more of a dent in my pocket because of a design logo, or what all the kids are wearing this year! I guess just dragging the kids to the store and them trying to buy all kinds of things that are not on the back to school list! They have their own agenda whenever we go to the store.

  1194. Jessica on August 14, 2009 4:05 pm

I don’t like how it costs so much to buy the things that I want–being a college student, it is a little bit difficult when I am also paying for tuition.

I still need 10, black marbelized, composition books; 3 hand sanitizers; and 2 – 2 inch binders. And of course they wanted many other items (my kids)that I had to say “No” to. The thing I hate most about back to school shopping is going down the stupid list that the school gives you of supplies that you need. Every single year, at least half of that stuff never leaves the closet and just gets donated at the end of the year. Not to mention the things like chalk, kleenex, and red pens that the school suggests that we buy and bring in on the first day to give to teacher. Isn’t that what I pay school taxes for?
