Subscriber! To simplify MY life, I have my kids do their own laundry. They are 10 and 13 and have been doing it for about a year and a half. My daughter was in a habit of taking clean clothes that I washed and folded and dropping them right back in her laundry basket instead of putting them away. She doesn’t do it anymore and I don’t have as much laundry stress as I used to! :)

We write out our menu for the week then shop accordingly,I also go through my coupons ,sometimes that factor in what will be on our menu.We always stock up on sale meat also. That helps for when we may not have as much to spend on groceries in some weeks.

I pack lunches for my daughters and husband to take with them every day. To simplify my life, there are nights that I cook dinner and plan to cook extra so I can use the leftovers in their lunches the next day. Some of their favorites: meatball sandwiches, chicken parm sandwiches, and meatloaf sandwiches. This saves me having to run to the store to buy deli meats.

I use the philosophy that if it won’t matter 100 years from now then it don’t matter now. It makes you realize that life does not have to be so serious.

I simplify my life by not following the norms of routines that mothers are supposed to follow. Sometimes my kids will stay up late or not.

    My schedule is not packed.

    I make enough for leftovers.

To simplify my life I serve a pot luck dinner once every 2 weeks to use up some of the leftovers in my house. I just make a lot of little different dishes so everyone gets a taste yet there is enough food to fill everyone up. Some examples are the last time we had pot luck I had 1 hamburger left over,a chicken breast, some
macaroni and cheese, some mashed potatoes and I just completed the meal with some fruit and a vegetable.

I simplify my life (and help out my budget) by keeping a supply of Uncle Bens precooked rice (the ones in the little cups) on hand at work along with cans of various broths and other items rice can be served with to make quick, healthy, CHEAP lunches – i.e. chili with rice, chicken a la king over rice, tomato soup with rice, and one of my favorites… chicken broth, canned mushrooms, and rice (with lots of black pepper in it).

I do laundry before peak electric hours or on the weekend when electric is cheaper.

  35. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 5:23 am

I hang my laundry on the clothesline. Cheaper than running the dryer!! I check my local weather channel to make sure it’s not going to rain.

  36. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 5:26 am

I have a vegetable garden. I planted perennial asparagus several years ago. Save a bunch of money.

  37. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 5:27 am

I plant plenty of tomatoes and green peppers. Any extras get cooked and frozen for the winter.

  38. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 5:32 am

Grew too many cucumbers? Cook them! I’ve sliced and fried or steamed. Bake in the oven. When done, slice longway, scoop out some cucumber and mix with whatever, like cooked stuffing or cooked meat & cheese. Put back in oven to melt cheese. So-o-o good!

  39. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 5:38 am

Planting a garden? I saved a ton of money by buying seeds and starting indoors. Some seeds require you start them outdoors when the weather is warm. Weigh the cost of 30 plants with the equivalent in seeds!! Priceless.

  40. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 5:42 am

Save a ton of money growing your own food. But if you don’t have a lot of room, large planters work great. They’ll be heavy when full, so make sure you put them where you want them so they get plenty of sun. You can also combine a few different vegetables in one large planter.

  41. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 5:44 am

To save money on electricity, I don’t run my dishwasher or clothes washer during peak electric hours. Depending on the time of year, peak hours are from 10am to 10pm. Check with your local electric company.

  42. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 5:47 am

Do you have an electric hot water heater? Save money by installing a timer. We have the hot water on during the morning when we’re doing dishes or taking showers. Then it’s off for the day. The water in the tank stays hot enough to wash hands. There’s only two of us, and may not work as good for a large family.

  43. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 5:48 am

Almost forgot, I subscribe to the blog.

  44. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 6:11 am

Do you bulk cook? Try it and save time and money. Cook a grill full of chicken or a large pan in the oven with pork chops. Season with pepper and garlic. Cool down and refrigerate. Package in freezer ziplocs for one family serving and freeze. Defrost when ready. You can microwave or steam. Continue with a recipe with BBQ sauce or your favorite recipe.

  45. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 6:21 am

I buy bulk at Sam’s Club and save a ton of money. I buy a case of 15 dozen eggs. That’s a lot of eggs to use in a month for 2 adults and 4 dogs! Did you know you can freeze eggs? Scramble eggs individually and put in oil sprayed cupcake tins. Using the silicone cupcake pans works better. Put in freezer until frozen. If using tins, run hot water on back of tin with plate under the egg so the eggs will drop on the plate. Put in ziploc bags and return to freezer. If you’re making a recipe that requires 3 eggs, or want to scramble eggs the next day, put the amount of eggs you need in a covered container and put in refrigerator to defrost. Use as needed. This is good to do if eggs go on a good sale and you can’t use them all. You’ll be saving money.

  46. Bonnie on May 3, 2009 6:27 am

Freeze milk? Of course. Did you ever run out of milk when you’re making mac n’ cheese, pancakes or whatever? Using a cupcake tin or silicone cupcake holder works better. Measure 1/4 cup in each and freeze. When frozen, run hot water over back of tin with plate under the milk and pop them out. Pops out better in silicone holders. Put in ziploc bag and put back in the freezer. When you run out of milk and just need some for a recipe, you can defrost in the microwave. Then add to your recipe. Saves you from pulling your hair out when you run out of milk for a recipe!!

I try to simplify my life when I cook ahead. I choose a menu plan for the week which may involve the same ingredient. For example I will hard boil 6-8 eggs and use them during the week for salads, tuna fish sandwich, put in with spinach or just to pack with lunch. Rice is another I can use for more than one meal. I will use it as a side dish, then the following day make stuffed bell peppers or homemade chicken rice soup.

I simplify my life by using my crockpot on busy days, noting is easier then a quick crockpot meal. Also because I have such a large family I often purchae a couple of frozen meals that only take a few minutes so that when we are really crunched for time I can throw them in a skillet and serve them a quick and healthy meal.
