Family Game Night Giveaway

You all know that we love “Family Game Night”  at my house from my last post that I wrote here. We continue to play even more so since the economy has taken it’s toll on our pocket books. I wanted to give you guys a comparison on how much you would spend for  a night at the movies for a family of 4 versus a family game night for family of 4.

Night at the movies for 4:

Movie Tickets for 2 adults $18

Movie Tickets for 2 kids $12

Combo #2 Lg Popcorn & 2 lg drinks $16.25

Total: $46.25

Family Game Night (using Walmarts prices):

$8 board games- Candyland,Chutes and Ladders, Yahtzee

$10 board games- Jenga, Monopoly,Trouble

$15 board games-Life, Operation and Twister

$18-Bop It, Monopoly Championship,Pictureka,Sorry Sliders

There are also tons of Family Movies for under $10  for example :

Little Rascals

A Goofy Movie

o       Air Buddies
o       Camp Rock
o       The Chronicle of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
o       College Road Trip
o       Dinosaur
o       Enchanted
o       Escape to Witch Mountain
o       Hercules
o       High School Musical
o       High School Musical 2
o       Homeward Bound 1
o       Homeward Bound 2
o       The Game Plan
o       National Treasure 1
o       National Treasure 2
o       Pollyanna
o       Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
o       Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Man’s Chest
o       Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
o       The Rescuers
o        Return to Witch Mountain
o       Snow Buddies
o       Treasure Planet
o       The Wild
o       Underdog

Snacks:

They have movie theater candy for only $1 each and Popcorn 3pks for around $3

So you could do a movie,a game and all the snacks for under $40. You could even do a theme. Here are some examples of some theme nights:

Example 1: Rock n’Roll Night
Turn your living room into a 50’s diner for Rock n’ Roll Night. The
family could play include Twister, watch one of the two High School
Musical movies, pull out those old tunes and serve diner themed foods
like milk shakes and classic hot dogs.

Example 2: Double Trouble Night
Turn family night into trouble fun by playing the infamous Trouble
game and bending the rules such as eating with your fingers.  Then
relax around the TV to watch your favorite Pirates of the Caribbean
movie and see how everyone’s favorite pirates get in and out of
trouble

Example 3:  Special Mission Night
This night is about solving puzzle and using your smarts to uncover a
mystery.  Create or solve puzzles, play Pictureka and consider adding
in a movie like National Treasure.  Secret receipts of creative snacks
might also be revealed!

Example 4: Day of the Week Family Night Kit
For a Sweet Tooth Sunday. Walmart would provide the board game
Candyland as well as the sugary sweet movie Pollyanna along soda and
makings for a homemade ice cream sundaes.

To get your creative juices flowing I want to give away a $40 GC for you to plan your special “Family Game Night”.

To Enter: Be creative and tell us what theme you couldcsome up with for your “Family Game Night” if you won.

I’d have a Princess Theme Party Night!
We’d get PRETTY PRETTY PRINCESS GAME and play it together…little girls in favorite princess dress up, then watch the new Disney Princesses DVD, and make homemade Princess milkshakes (strawberry milkshakes, princess pink colored!)

    thanks for the fun giveaway!

I would have a family night with board games (which we already do) and have ice cream with lots of different toppings to choose from.

    Thanks!

  7. Jamie on September 20, 2009 1:52 pm

Love it!! My son is 4, so we’re just getting into the games – AND my hubby is in the military and has been away for 20 months, but will be home next week (we hope) – yay!! This would be great for us to reunite as a family!! I think we would go with “It’s SWEET to be home!” – since my son is a homebody – and stock up on sweet treats and have a candy theme…complete with Candy Land!! :)

I would have a Family Theme night of PJ night. We could all get ready for bedtime and then after that we could get the board games out like Monopoly, our favorite and have a little family competion on who can play the best!

  12. April Vereb on September 20, 2009 6:24 pm

What about an “Undercover” night where I could make some snacks/meals using food coloring (or think the “creepy weird foods” for Halloween) and everyone “inspects” and guesses what it is, while we watch Inspector Gadget, and play maybe a game of Clue.

Sounds like tons of fun to me! :)

We have special nights where the younger are the captains of the teams and the adults are are their teams- like monopoly, We have sleepovers where everyone is in their pjs and we snuggle all over and watch movies and eat homemade pizza and popcorn. We also have breakfast nights where we have breakfast for dinner and watch only cartoon movies. I love the fact that once you buy the games you have them for a long time and can buy one or two every few months and add to the collection and soon have a closet full of fun.

Our Game Night would include Monopoly!! I have a collection of Monopoly games from the very first to the one with the one with the gold hotels. We would pop microwave popcorn, break open some soda, and put out a bowl of M&M’s to complete the picture. Set a time limit, depending on the morning call time and go to it!!! Love Game/family evening!!

My kids love to play cards, too, so we alternate between Family Game Nights and Family Card Game Nights…

Go Fish, War, Crazy 8’s, Uno (we’ve got a bunch of different themed ones,) Mad Lib (the card game is pretty tricky but we enjoy the challenge!), along with a few others that we picked up at Target for less than $4 each.

We’ve enjoyed playing board/card games with the kids since the boys were little (they are now almost 9 and almost 7) and while they are still technically considered “little” it’s great to see how they now love to play Candyland, Chutes N Ladders and Backyardigans Memory with their sisters, who are almost 3 and then 20 months.

Thanks for the great contests always!

  35. Susan on September 20, 2009 7:32 pm

    We play Harry Potter Clue.

So we could all dress as wizards from the movie, play the game, then watch the movies.

I think my boys would enjoy a “This is your life” Night!
I’d incorporate stories about our own experiences in school. My boys are 8 & 14 and are having social experiences that are VERY new!
I would get the game of LIFE and I think the game itself would open up discussions, especially with the 14yo. I would get The Breakfast Club. Not only because it was a movie from our era, but it’s a timeless movie about how kids really are towards each other!
For dinner I would have breakfast, and let them help :O)

We love to play SORRY! We could possibly eat only yellow, red, blue or green foods to match whichever color we are playing in the game. The movie would be more difficult to tie into this theme. Perhaps an American Girl movie with a Sorry message?

  58. Donna Holmberg on September 20, 2009 10:53 pm

I’d have a “Sorry” Game night. Everyone would dress completely in the color of their Sorry pieces (red blue green yellow) and all the snacks would be colors to match (dyed popcorn, coolaid, fresh fruit/veggies, and even marshmallow rice crispie squares. We would let the winner choose their favorite movies to watch that night after the game and NOBODY is allowed to complain.

main entry: what a great idea for entrys! Ok I have two ideas! #1 is a Doctor theme party night” which consist of playing operation board game while munching on vegtables that look like organs like calliflower would be brains olives for eyes etc then buy DR Doolittle with Eddie Murphy on DVD and eat more healthy snacks. My #2 theme is Island Life by playing battleship and eating finger foods like fish sticks, pop corn shrimp, make some bite size crab cakes, and have colored koolaide in tiny cups with umbrellas in them then watch the DVD bought at walmart of Swiss Family Robinson (the old or newer version) I llke the old one myself. This was a fun idea consumerqueen and all can be bought at walmart a whole lot less than a night out at thhe movies. Thanks for the giveaway!

We have a younger family, so I think a candy land theme night would be perfect. I would make a giant Ho-ho (chocolate jelly roll) and dinner would be onigiri (rice balls) that I would make to look like candy. Plus, of course, playing candy land and watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

  83. Rebecca on September 21, 2009 10:02 am

I subscribe to your feed! (I also have a second idea of a theme, that I am posting for fun.) Lady and the Tramp night complete with spaghetti and meatballs eaten on the floor from a red check covered coffee table. The activity would probably be coloring and making doggie masks to watch the movie while wearing.

  84. Valeen N on September 21, 2009 10:10 am

We could have a “World Traveler” night. We could watch the movie,”Around the World in Eighty Days” and then play Monopoly, World Edition. Our snacks could be things from different countries, like Taquitos, german pastries, french fries (okay, the last one is a stretch!).

If we were going to do a theme night I’d go with a Ocean theme. You could play go fish, watch Sea Monsters creatures of the deep( or Little Mermaid or Finding Nemo if you have younger kids) and make fish tacos and jello with fish gummies for dessert.

  109. Thao on September 22, 2009 12:23 pm

We have the game scene it and we would dress up as our favorite movie characters and quotes lines from movies. Food items could be also themed for our character. I could go as Hermione from Harry Potter and bring Hermione’s Hogwarts Hash browns.

My son and I did this on Saturday….we started out with pizza with black olives (our favorite!). We watched Space Camp which I had DVR’d from Disney a few days before. When it was dark, we went outside and layed on the trampoline looking for stars and constelations. We played glow stick tag (just cheap glow sticks found in the party stuff isle) after in the dark and then had smores (melted in the microwave). Needless to say this night won me the title of “best mom ever” which was quickly recalled when the next morning we played the slightly less popular “clean your room” game.

Ours would have to be a Munchkin night, with Wizard of Oz in the background and for snacking we’d have Runts, Lil Smokies and Bagel Bites washed down with YooHoo (as in “yoohoo,i’m down here”).

  115. Megan Stiller on September 22, 2009 1:30 pm

I would do a candy themed night! you win a certain candy if you win the game, and of course candy land would be involved!

  116. Amber W. on September 22, 2009 2:15 pm

I would have a “ready to read” party. My daughter is learning to read with “Bob” books. I would draw the characters and place them throughout our living room. We would have a indoor picnic (complete with the new Cheeze-It Scrabble crackers and cookies shaped like letters). Then we would have my daughter read us a new Bob book and then play Scrabble Jr.

  117. KellyH on September 22, 2009 2:45 pm

If we got to have a game night with Dad, we would do dad activities. He works into the evening, often past when the little ones go to bed. We would find a game for him, lots of snacks and maybe watch a Packers game.

    Thanks!
    KellyH

    RE:FAMILY GAME NIGHT
MY IDEA FOR FAMILY GAME NIGHT IS THIS: i WOULD SET UP A TENT IN THE LIVING ROOM AND HAVE A “CAMP IN” W/MY KIDS. WE COULD PLAY “LETS GO FISHING” BOARD GAME AND EAT HOMEMADE SMORES WHILE WATCHING “ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN”!

  121. Meredith from Merchant Ships on September 23, 2009 9:15 am

We watched a DVD of vintage Hardy Boys on Mickey Mouse Club, about hidden pirate treasure. For the finale episode, I made a pirate dinner and then had a treasure hunt for the kids to find movie theatre candy hidden in a chest.

  122. maria on September 23, 2009 9:33 am

I would like to do abig pagama party with my family and maybe grandparents. It can be a big sleepover!!

  123. Can Can (Mom Most Traveled) on September 23, 2009 9:43 am

I would like to stay with the food theme…Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Candyland board game, and decorate your own sugar cookies activity. Yums!

  125. Dena Watkins on September 23, 2009 12:59 pm

I have been thinking this since I saw the $40 game night idea.
That once you have a few games you could change the movies and food menu and since you already have the games it gets cheaper. or even change the movie and get a new game before long movie night would be almost free.
thanks, everyone has such good ideas for this.
    Have fun with this idea

How about a movers and shakers night with twister and a hula hoop contest. For food, you can give everyone popcorn containers with lids and seasonings so you can shake up your popcorn snack!

Teach us a game we’ve never played before, let’s try to cook a new dish, and watch a movie that will teach us something.

we’d do an extreme night, with physical challenges thrown in between the game challenges.

  137. Carol on October 16, 2009 2:09 pm

My kids adore Swiss Family Robinson so that would be our theme! We’d camp out in the living room, and the kids could pretend certain areas of the room were treehouses. All of the food would be simple, no forks or utensils, all finger food. And we’d play games and bond just like the real Swiss Family Robinson.

I would come up with a “healthy” themed night with some healthy fruit/veggie snacks and we would play twister to make us more aware of our bodies and then play Life or Balderdash to work our creative juices and get our minds going!

  144. Margaret Smith on October 16, 2009 7:00 pm

I would love to have a Family Game Night with a theme of playing games that my husband and I played with as kids.
Clue, Life, Monopoly,Memory to name a few. I think my kids would be so happy to play the same games that we also played as kids.
    Thanks so much.

Our next game night is going to be a Birthday game night for my son-in-law. We’ll be having pizza and appetizers. Since there are 2 small children we’ll have a movie for all of us and then the oldest child will get to play games wiwth us for a while. After she goes to bed we’ll switch over to either Monopoly or Scrabble.

  147. Kathy Scott on October 19, 2009 8:56 am

How about Cooking Night? Everyone could get involved in making a meal for the week before the fun begins. Sure would help mom out.

  148. Michele on October 20, 2009 1:59 pm

Thank you for the giveaway. I’d have a game, music and ice cream night with my family! It would be fun because, we’d pick out a fun game to play, make sundae’s and turn on some tunes!

  149. wendy wallach on October 20, 2009 2:38 pm

I would probably choose mystery night…

The game of clue, costumes, and dinner would be a mystery in that they would have to search the cabinets for what they want…

  151. Leann S on October 20, 2009 9:38 pm

We like to play games when we go camping so I think I would have a camping theme.

We could make smores, break out the sleeping bags and watch Grizzly Adams.

  152. Leann S on October 20, 2009 9:39 pm
  153. Julie Moe on October 21, 2009 7:37 pm

Our theme could be exercise. We’d pick games, like Twister, that exercise our bodies too.

  154. Molly K on October 22, 2009 8:26 am

My boys are younger and just learning how to play games. I think it would be fun to do Candyland but change it up a little. Do something like if you land on red you get to take a piece of candy or land on blue and you get to take someone else’s candy. Make it more interesting than just the game itself.

I think that we would have a pirates night! We would all dress up as pirates and play the pirate games. we could make walk the plank sandwiches with eye patch cookies! We would also have a treasure hunt here in the house with the prize being a little treasure box of candy. I have the perfect little box for this. I think that we would top if off with watching one of the pirate of the carabian movies

  157. Auriette on October 22, 2009 8:06 pm

    My Theme is: WORDPLAY

Alphabet Soup for dinner, a game of Scrabble, and the movie “Akeelah and the Bee”.

  158. Suzanne Lewis on October 22, 2009 8:37 pm

I’d choose Let’s Get Wordy and play word games.

Since we are heading into the cold, miserable winter. I would do a beach party theme. I would crank up the heat, everyone would wear summer clothes, we would spread a beach blanket on the floor and play games!

    scrabble and babble night
