Honda Motor Co. is expanding an earlier recall of certain Honda- and Acura-brand vehicles from the 2001 through 2003 model years to replace their driver’s-side airbag inflators.

The car maker says the inflators may activate with too much pressure, and their cases could rupture, possibly causing injury or death. The recall affects about 273,000 vehicles sold in the U.S.

In a separate action the company said it found about 640 defective airbag service parts were sold for installation in vehicles that needed repairs. Honda said it isn’t able to trace where the parts wound up, it will have to recall an additional 603,000 to inspect their airbag systems and replace defective parts if they are present.

Honda earlier this year recalled 833,000 vehicles for similar airbag problems.

Overall, the widened recall now includes certain 2001 and 2002 Accord, 2001 to 2003 Civic, 2001 to 2003 Odyssey, 2002 and 2003 CR-V, 2003 Pilot, 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL vehicles.

Honda said it will begin notifying customers later this month. Owners can find additional information or contact the company at www.recalls.honda.com or 800-999-1009. Acura owners can go to www.recalls.acura.com or call 800-382-2238.
